GETTING AROUND

LifestyleCanberra is renowned as one of the great planned cities of the world, which means getting around is easy, convenient and quick. Traffic jams and pollution are virtually unheard of, there are no toll roads and most journeys around Canberra will take 25 minutes or less. Even during peak ‘hour’, which is actually closer to half an hour, the excellent road system means that traffic still flows freely to and from the city centre.

With over 500 kilometres of bike paths, many Canberrans choose to ride to work. The clean air, beautiful scenery and ease of movement make this a popular and attractive alternative to driving. In fact, more and more Canberra residents are walking, cycling or catching the bus to work.

Canberra’s public transport system, ACTION, is a fast, safe and reliable bus service. Services such as bustext for timetable information and Bike ‘n Ride make ACTION a great way of getting around, and MyWay cards now provide an easy rechargeable ticketing system as an alternative to cash fares.

Canberra is within easy reach of other major cities. Sydney is just a three-hour drive with divided highway all the way. Travel to Sydney by bus or train is also accessible and affordable.

For travelling further afield, the Canberra International Airport is just ten minutes from the centre of the city and offers regular flights to all Australian capital cities and daily connections to regional centres.

The ACT Department of Territory and Municipal Services can help you with information on getting around, including public transport, cycling and cycling paths, roads, parking, licensing, vehicle registration and more.
